There is one person walking in photo but he or she is so far away that you can hardily see them.
The photo is in black and white.
The thing that caught my eye at first was how damaged the surroundings are.

Heavy or light?
Positive or negative?
Dark or light?

The photo I would have to say is heavy because there is a lot took look at in so many ways.

Write a paragraph explaining your response to this photograph. Use specifics from your responses to the other questions to support your answer.
This is a very complex photo because it was taken in a time of hate and sorrow and this just shows how people lived at this time. When I answered the question about what I caught my eye first it was the simplest question because when you first look at this photo it will make your heart sob.

Write two questions that you might ask the photographer or the subjects of the picture if you had the opportunity to learn more about the photograph or / and its subject(s).
One question I would ask the photographer is how did feel when you took this photo it must have been dishearten to look at something you knew to be great and wonderful and see it be destroyed and not the same that must have a great effect Another question I would ask is why did you take this photo and what does it mean to you?

This picture was taken in May of 1941 by a photographer named Jack Delano.
The picture is of Main street in Greensboro, Alabama.
The photo was taken outdoors on a bright day, because you can see how dark the shadows are that are under the cars.
I would describe this as an urban photo because for the great depression era, this photo is really modern because of all the cars, the coco-cola advertisement, and all the stores and buildings.

number_onee.jpg
This photo was taken by Walker Evans in Selma, Alabama in 1935.
As you can see this photograph is an outdoor shot of some sidewalk stores.
the lighting in this picture is bright, because it was taken outside, in the day time.
I would describe this picture as urban for its time becuase it has modern city folk, and advertisements.

In this photo there is 6 people.
To me, it looks like there are five men and one girl bending down to get something, so we cant see her face.
The men are all dressed in black and grey suits with hats , but are too far away to see any distinguished festures.
Someting in the photo that catches my eye is the advertisements on the wall outside the general store.
Also that 5 men are sitting around, and arent in work in the middle of the day.

In the picture, next to the general store, there is a grocery store in the background.
Both stores are in okay condition, but I would say that the grocery store looks a wee bit better.
Both have Coco-Cola adds, but the general store has many other adds aswel.
The stores are right next to each other, in somewhat of a plaza type of building with a side walk inffrount of it.

The photo has a light and negitive tone, which reflects on the nice day, but the fact that the men above are out of work, idleising, when they should be working is negitive, and sad. It shows how the great depression affecting the lives of the average americans.

In this photo, there are five men sitting around a general store on a nice sunny day. I can assume by this that they are out of work in result from the great depression, or on a lunch break because of the grocery store and the general store behind them.
FINISH TONIGHT FOR HOMEWORK

If I could ask the subjects a question, I would ask them what they are doing outside a general store instead of working.
I would also ask the photographer, Walker Evans, why he took the picture. This picture was obviously taken on purpose, so I would like to know why the photographer took this picture, and what he was thinking when he took it.

  1. What is the setting of the photograph?
Indoors or out?
Lighting?
Urban or rural?
What time of day or night?

The photo is taken out doors.
Its outdoors so the lighting is the sun light.
Its looks more to be rural life .but a store like that would be in urban.
Around day time.

  1. Describe what you see in the photograph. Include specific details.
Are there any people?
Number?
Age(s)?
Clothing?
Color?
Distinguishing features?
What catches your eye first?

There really is not much going on in this photo it sort of looks like a ghost time. There are some bill board and thing like that.

  1. What structures are in the photograph?
Homes or businesses?
In what condition?
What is the spacing?
What surrounds the structures?

It’s a store so it’s a business because it’s a store. The store is not small by any means but it’s not huge. there are electric pots

  1. What is the tone of the photograph?
Heavy or light?
Positive or negative?
Dark or light?

Ist in black & white!
  1. Write a paragraph explaining your response to this photograph. Use specifics from your responses to the other questions to support your answer. I think this photo represents The Great Depression well because no one had any money to shop at any stores. So showing this photo with no one in or around the store is perfect. I think during this time people really did not understand what was going on so they just took everything over the top and went way over board

  1. Write two questions that you might ask the photographer or the subjects of the picture if you had the opportunity to learn more about the photograph or / and its subject(s). I think I would ask the photographer how he felt when he took this photo because when you take a photo capturing a wonderful moment you feel that in side so well then this man took this he must of felt something as well. Another question I would is why did he talk this photo in the first place.
  2. I would think there would be a reason why he would take a photo of a store and he problem would have a wonderful story behind it

What is the setting of the Photographs?
The photograph was taken indoors inside of a farm. The lighting is very dim. Because it is a farm, the setting is rural.

Describe what you see in the photograph. Include specific details
There are two adults and two children in the photo. The children are young in the picture. all of the people are dressed casually. The fact that they have newpapers on their walls catches my eye first.

What structures are in the photograph?
The family is located in what seems to be a house or farm. It does not seem to be in great condition and it looks very small.

What is the tone of the photograph?
The tone is depressing. The family does not seem happy at all.

This photo represents the harsh times that all families faced during the Industrial Revolution. This family doesn't have much money. for instance, their walls are made of newspaper and they are all crowded around one small bed. Most people seemed saddened by the Great Depression and it greatly affected every family no matter who they were.

A question I might ask the photographer is how it came to be that he took this photo . What were his thoughts when taking the picture? I would want to know if the photographer knew the family personally.

What is the setting of the photograph?
The photograph is taken outdoors and it is on the edge between an urban and rural location. The picture seems to be taken during the day

Describe what you see in the photograph. Include specific details
There are no visible people in this photograph. One thing that catches my eye is that it is so deserted, there doesnt seem to be any people around the coca-cola shack at all

What structures are in the photograph?
There is one building. It is a coca-cola shack that looks to be in bad condition. The only thing that surrounds the structure is are chimmneys left over from houses that are no longer there

The tone of the photograph is depressing because there is no life in the photo. There are no people left in the are and there are chimneys left over from houses that were once there. That is very saddening how there once were houses there, but they no longer stand

A question I might ask the photographer is why they decided to take this photograph, and what made them want to pick this specifice area.

What is the setting of the photgraph?
1. The setting of this picture is the outside view of an apparently out of business store called Eagle’s Store. It appears to be during the daytime. There is no lighting in the store so I can conclude the store has gone out of business due to the Great Depression. It appears to be a common urban type store.

2. There are no people in the photograph, this provides further evidence as to the state of the store business wise. Due to the dilapidated condition of the store, I am led to believe it is very old and no one has used it in a long time. It is a black and white photograph. What caught my eye’s first was the Eagle’s Store sign.

3. The structure I see in the photograph is a store called Eagle’s Store. The store appears to be in very bad condition and is run-down. Surrounding the structure is an empty parking lot.

4. The tone of the photograph is a depressing empty tone. The emptiness of the parking lot and store and the run down condition of the store both express gloominess. It is defiantly a dark picture.

5. My response to the photograph is that it gave me an empty feeling. The picture has no people or any sign of life. In today’s society a store like this would be brimming with life. But here is this picture with not a trace of life. It gives an air of discomfort and uneasiness. Also you can probably imagine the amount of workers who lost there job when this store went out of business. The store is defiantly a symbol of grief and suffering.

6. Q # 1: When the picture was taken, how long ago had the store run out of business?
Q # 2: How many people lost their job when the store went out of business?

1. The setting of this photo is outside during the day. It appears to be an urban setting.

2. Yes there are people. There are 2 people that I can see. They appear to be middle-aged. One is dressed in all white, which leads me to believe he is working at a gas station, and the other is in a suit, I think that he is the owner of the vehicle. What caught my eye first was the fact the man was pushing the car, considering cars usually don’t need to be pushed.

3. The structures in the photograph are a few houses and buildings but in the center is a vehicle. The car isn’t in the greatest condition and I would assume it is out of gas due to the fact a man is pushing it. What surrounds the vehicle are roads.

4. It is a light mood but sort of a negative tone. This is because you don’t often see people running out of gas and needing to push their car anymore. It is a slightly dark picture because of the saddening fact the man has run out of gas and needs to push his car.

5. My response to the photograph is that I believe it represents struggle. A man who probably does not make much money must also pay for his gas. Not many people were even able to keep their cars, many had to sell them. The picture shows that the man has run out of gas and is now pushing his car to the nearest gas station.

6. Q # 1. Who is the man in all white, is it the owner of the car?
Q # 2. How much did gas cost back then and was it hard to afford?

1. The setting of the picture is an old apartment building that looks rather beaten.

2. No there are no visible people, but I would assume there are people in the apartment rooms. What caught my eye was the dilapidated condition of the apartment building.

3. The structure I see in the photograph is an apartment building. The building looks to be in bad condition and I can guess not many people are living in the building, if any. What surrounds the building is a road.

4. It has a dark tone because it appears to be empty or at least not very occupied. This is dark because most hotel apartments are full of life and people and this one is not.

5. My response to this photograph is that many people in the Great Depression had to live in the same room and it was probably very cramped. This picture is a good example of the kind of living condition a person living back then had.

6. Q # 1. How old is the apartment building?
Q # 2. Are there people living in the apartments?
